Interesting to see the Old Town and new town of Plovdiv. Definitely need to make use of a walking tour to hear about the history etc especially the Ancient Stadium of Philipopolis which runs under the H & M store! We used Plovdiv Trips for two tours out of the City which was well worth it. Karmen and Stoyan were both excellent and knowledgeable guides. Plenty of good eating places and friendly

Plovdiv is a city of contrasts, spanning many centuries. You can't help but stumble across history wherever you go. The centre is largely pedestrianised, making it easy to walk around, with lots of bars, cafes and restaurants, as well as shops. Highly recommend the the Free Plovdiv walking tour which starts every day at 11am from outside the town hall in the centre. Very informative and takes you to all the key locations, giving you a great starting point from which to explore further. Check out the Kapana area for food & drink and the Old Town.

I have stayed in Plovdiv 13 times and will go back many more... It is an important city historically, with around 8000 years of continuous inhabitation. Many interesting landmarks from so many periods of history. There's museums to see, roman stadiums to uncover, a roman theatre to enjoy a show at, historical sites from the neolithic age right through to the Ottoman Empire and that's just the tip of the iceberg. It has a great restaurant and bar scene, with something for everyone. People are also very friendly. A nice place to relax, eat, and enjoy life for a little while. Pretty much everything is walking distance of the centre and for the few place a bit further out there are taxis and busses readily available.IanTurkey

The roads in the old town are made of square rocks which makes it difficult to walk on for elderly people and impossible for a person with a disability.
