Beautiful place, beautiful little house we stayed in, surrounded by wonderful gardens and trees. Great facilities and quiet, great place to relax and just enjoy! Location was off the main town, but honestly it is only a little walk away and not inconvenient at all as you can walk easily. Food was fabulous too, staff super friendly and knowledgeable, we could ask for anything! Loved it!

I had just over three days in San Agustin (4 nights).
I had just over three days in San Agustin (4 nights). I could have done one less but the bus didn't arrive until late afternoon on day 1. Day 2 I went to the archaeological park on my own, day 3 a group tour and day 4 a private tour of the other sites which are covered separately as nobody seems to run a tour to them. The hotel organised them all.
The group tour is really good value as it's a full day and you go to lots of sites. It's COP60k and there 7 in the group I was part of. There is a strange ending at an amusement park whch would bes best skipped.
It's easy to go the archaeological park on your own (buy the 2-day ticket when you get there). There was a bus running but it was COP10k in a taxi and a 40 min walk (downhill back)
Lots of stuff online about bus schedules - two bus companies have ticket office on the main street and posters outside. Times are different to anything online. Some buses run from the centre and some start at a newly built bus station a couple of miles out of town. The mini bus to Neiva (815am) took almost 7hrs due to roadworks and was v uncomfortable despite calling it a premium service. I think there were smart, large coaches going at other times from then main bus station
There ins't much reason to be in the town itself. There are a couple of good places the main sq for food and drink and there's a tourist street a few blocks over

I have been to a lot of Colombia now, and San Agustin is the best town/city I have been in. Beautiful at night, safe, interesting. Very calm and peaceful.
The UNESCO site was extremely disappointing. It's basically been destroyed. They have found lots of (great) statues in the forest, dragged them out and stuck them on concrete slabs next to a path. A few statues have been collected together at the top of a hill. The connection between the statues and their environment has been absolutely annihilated. And the people who made the statues, in the middle of the forest, thought "big stone, will never be moved, cool statue in the forest'. Nope. Sad for me; disgraceful for the fools who have destroyed this site. Nice walk in the forest, the statues themselves are cool, but basically heartbreaking.

This is the perfect place for nature lovers and those looking for cultural experiences related to history, archeology, and indigenous lives and experiences in this part of Colombia. You will love the mountains and the fresh air, and the feeling of being connected with the indigenous past in its large open-air archaeological park

There didn't seem to be a lot of hikes, BUT there's lots of other stuff to do. White water rafting, kayaking, horse back riding, jeep 4x4 tour, archelogical museum, and the other stops where you can see the megalythic stones! And the taxi ride from town to get to Masaya Hostel (best view in town and not even overly expensive) was only 10,000 cop. We were supposed to only be here 2 nights and 3 days, but ended up staying at Masaya for 5 nights and 6 days!

Plan more than three days!
Plan more than three days! Locals recommend 5 days - and it's true. If you want to really enjoy, take a private 4x4 driver for a day instead of joining a group: You can stop wherever and however long you want, no hurry! And most probably the driver is or was a guide anyway.
DO NOT MISS "La Pelota"! (a round magma-ball hill)
Most tours and guides bypass it, because there are only a few statues. BUT they are the only ones with preserved colors. Not restored, original, because the hill was very dry.

San Agustín is a fantastic place to stay, inverse in the mountains, has the archeological park and the other archeological sites, the estrecho of Magdalena river and the town of San Agustín, and the horse back riding.
We stayed 2 days in it was very short. I suggest 4-5 days.
The food was very good, particularly at Altos de Hierbabuena.
- very centrally located. The van going to and from Pitalito is just a block away, and it’s near so many restaurants.
- fast internet connection
- I dig the design of the hotel itself, it’s very classy
- affordable. The price of a single room is as affordable as a bunk bed in a hostel, plus you get your own toilet
- the hotel is also a travel agency, and the tour that they offer is quite affordable.
- extra kudos to Paula the receptionist! She recommended a lot of stuff to me and was always extra nice whenever I asked something
We had a wonderful time! The facilities are great and it's a beautiful hotel. Mostly it is the friendly staff, Carlos greeted us and attended to every need during our stay. Dievir, the waiter for two events was great as was Raul, or waiter on the last night. The breakfasts were exception, the restaurant was charming, the food was very good, but again, it was the service that made this place stand out. We will be back.
Nice house style small hotel. The owner or manager was very nice as was the lady who makes breakfast (the arepas with breakfast are great!). Room was spacious and comfortable bed. Some sitting areas and hammocks outside and a small kitchen that guests can use. Easy walk to the main archeological park and they helped us set up another tour one day as well (ask the lady that cooks for Sandro, he was a great guide).
i absolutely loved this place. it's well outside of the town of San Agustin but only a 5 minute walk from the archeological park entrance. i enjoyed its location because it was quiet. the rooms are large and very comfortable. the bed was comfortable. the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. breakfast was delicious. one of the best things was the friendly dog!
The owners of the place are excellent people as they welcome you in their house, providing with all services needed including driving you around the city; they help you arranging some tours around awesome places near San Agustín and they took you out to dine and they prepare breakfast every morning. I was really happy with the staying at this hotel .
It's Masaya San Agustin. That's all.obviously it's the best, most romantic, best food, mas tranquilo, place and the staff treat you like you are important and are so sweet, the massage was awesome too. Our second time and we'll be back next year. San Agustin and Masaya are a tradition for us. Unforgettable.
Great budget hotel in the heart of the San Agustín community. The pool is a welcome addition. The hosts were fantastic helping us at all stages of our trip compensating for our lack of Spanish with google translate. Breakfasts were great quality and value. A great place to stay.
Great location: in the center of the town, with a lot of eateries around.
The owner of the hotel Luis was extremely helpful. He helped me book tours (with no surcharge!), gave me local insider’s information on where to eat, what to see, how to get from A to B etc.
Great price!
This was seriously the best hotel I've ever been to! Such a nice place, the most friendly people that work here, outstanding service and amazing food in the restaurant! I loved staying here to explore San Agustin and the area around. I will definitely come back in the future!
Good location within walking distance of archeological site.
Help from hotel manager Carlos for visiting other places in San Agustin
A traditional place with light construction building, giving it a camping feeling but well designed and we'll equiped.
Loved it all! Beds were so comfy, lounge area was really cosy and loved the fireplace. plenty of areas in the garden to relax. We didn't really like San Agustin town that much so this was an amazing little slice of paradise 15 mins walk out of town
Super clean and secure parking. The hotel is well run and a comfortable place to stay for a few days. The hotel is within walking distance of the main square. There are views of the surrounding mountains from the hotel.
Fabulous, lovingly cooked food, very friendly and helpful hosts, beautiful & peaceful setting! I wouldn't have been able to enjoy San Agustin nearly as much if I had stayed somewhere else. Very highly recommended!
The best stay I had in Colombia. Excellent location in San Agustin. Quiet, off the main street. Exotic interior and gardens. Superb staff. Most accommodating and hospitable, esp. the owner Dally Valdes.👍🙂
I stayed in Dec 2023. The hotel is very new and everything is super clean. I was given a warm welcome from José-David and Fernando and the restaurant was able to accommodate my late arrival.
