PL is a very pleasant fishing village in EC on the Pacific ocean. The beach is fabulous and there are many good places to eat. We recommend eating at Ancora. The owners and staff are great. The chef is from Barcelona and makes some original Spanish dishes.
One bit of advice for all these beach villages is eat early to avoid the loud music that fires up as the evening progresses. For some reason they think this extremely loud music is what everyone wants to hear.

There were lots of things to do outside the beach: whale watching, scuba, seeing the monkeys in the Sendero Bola del Oro, bird watching in Ayampe Reserve. In the community el Pital we used Carlos Manrique and it was a great guide - 0982767109 or on Facebook at sendero bola de oro. We went with the Rosita whale watching and they really tried to make sure you got your money's worth of whales, seals, and boobies! It is fun to get up in the morning and watch the fishing boats come back in with the birds fighting the fishermen for their haul! There were so good restaurants depending on your taste - the Hotel Victor Hugo had lots of variety and good desserts; the Il Capuccino pizzería Ristorante had good options and a friendly staff.

Like most travellers in summer we went to Puerto Lopez for Isla de Plata and the whale watching. It's definitely worth a visit as Isla de Plata, the turtles and humpback whales were magnificent.
Unfortunately in summer you only have a few real sunny days. We had one (when we visited Isla de Plata) but the other days were overcasted with sometimes a fine drizzle. Therefore we did not went to visit/see Parque National Machalilla which should be worth a visit as well.

Small beach town with much to do if you are into wildlife exploration.
Even though accommodation options are limited and fairly pricey (I recommend Casita Madame for the best value-for-money), we have stayed in and around Puerto Lopez for over a week, exploring the beaches, Isla de Plata, nearby villages… we go on tours, snorkeling, diving, swimming, hiking— no reason to get bored!
Restaurants are a bit tricky so we switched to accommodation with kitchen pretty soon, but do try Aloha Cafe, Cappuccino (the Italian) or the Colombian place (around the corner from Cappuccino but I forget the exact name).

Puerto Lopez is a great spot to spend a few days and nights. Don't forget to visit Pacha Chocolates and coffee on the E15 north of town. The owners are there and will give a tour if you have 4 people. The day trip to Isle La Plata is a great trip for $45 each but be prepared to walk and climb.

The problem was that it was supposed to be sunny but it was just pouring rain the whole time. The town is mud bath in bad weather, only marginally set up for this kind of thing. It still represents a much better choice in terms of its range of services compared to the neighboring towns.
The owner, Marianela, was super friendly, caring, welcoming, helpful and gracious. She made us feel like family and offered to help us with every part of our stay in Puerto Lopez. She even booked our whale watching excursion. The “room” that I stayed at with my 84 year old mother and elderly aunt was more like an apartment with a terrace and beautiful view of the city and the Pacific. It’s a perfect place for a peaceful vacation while still having access to the activities in the city. I would recommend this accommodation to everyone!
It's a beautiful place, the cabanas are cute and comfy. The place is very near downtown, with great access to restaurants and stores. The beach is right across the street. Still, it's a nice quiet place, but if you want action it's not too far away. The staff helped me book a tour to Isla de la Plata, which was absolutely fantastic, whales, sea turtles, sea birds, and beautiful Ocean views. Also the fro t of the hotel faces west, so you can enjoy a beautiful sunset.
really great rooms with big comfy beds, tv, ac, and big bathrooms. Felt so comfortable there that i extended my stay from 3 nights to 6! The whole place has the feel of a mini resort. The breakfast is great and always changing, the decor and vibe is beautiful. The pool looked excellent too. Location is about a ten minute walk from the beach- a bit further than most other hostels and hotels but not a big deal.
A beautiful and tasteful hotel. The rooms were spacious and in a really nice style. Our balcony was amazing- we had a hammock, chairs and sofa to chill on.
The pool was beautiful.
The rooms/ cabins were in an enclosed area with lovely planting. It was heaven.
The breakfasts were great too and the staff were so kind and generous.
We have been in Ecuador for 5 weeks and this is bar far our favourite hotel
The location was amazing, right across from the ocean. The upstairs common area was ideal for us, we had friends on the trip with us and we met there often to visit, it was a great space. The staff was always helpful and friendly. The hotel and rooms were always very clean. The chicken fingers were super good and the HUGE chicken burger was amazing!! We would definitely stay here again!!
The property was across the street from the beach. The food is fresh and the flavour’s are amazing, wow, first class dinning on the beach. Sophie is originally from France and takes pride in maintaining her hotel in high stand. With great food, lodging and ocean views from the tiki style villa, you will soon realise Casita Madame was the right choice for your fun summer destination.
far enough from the noise of the beach area, close enough to walk. Was able to bring our dog with us, they have an outdoor area fr dogs if your dog is an outdoor dog. Breakfast was included. Good price for a hotel, running hot and cold water in the shower. Large outdoor pool area was great for relaxing with friends. Good strong air conditioner kept the room cool.
Pleasant hostal with a great atmosphere created by the owner. The hostel has a great location in the center and a short walk from the beach. Puerto Lopéz is a very pleasant and quiet place to relax, with great restaurants and bars. The options for what you would like around Puerto Lopez will advise you directly at the hostel.
Quiet location, so good sleep, but still easily walkable area. Nice staff who provided advice on day trips we planned. Good breakfast included (fruit, eggs, bread, juice, coffee/tea). Hot water. AC. Delightful hotel dogs. Hammocks on balconies.
Heidi's place is in a fantastic location, right across the fish market on the malecon and super close to everything you would need in Puerto Lopez. Heidi was great and super welcoming. I would definitely recommend staying here!
Excellent location and welcoming and accommodating staff. Wonderful breakfast spread including eggs, cheese, ham, brewed coffee, bread rolls, smoothie, fruit. Best pizza since I’ve been in Ecuador. Clean pool and rooms.
very beautiful room in a even more beautiful & relaxing garden with extra area to sit and make coffee/tea (available). Great restaurant on the property with the best coffee of Ecuador (my opinion at least ;-))
Location, sea view from the room, decoration of the hotel and all the staff was great and helpful.
Really nice place to stay in puerto lopez, i recommend and i am only sorry that we just stayed for one night
location is great—very quiet end of malecón—and beautiful. good shower and AC. I could happily live on the terrace for the rest of my life. clearly, they have put some money well-spent into this hotel!
I liked that the room was big and with a lot of windows, surrounded by nature. The hotel was very close to the beach and in the lobby there is a lot of games. The staff was also friendly.
Most friendly staff ever! Beautiful gardens, excellent location. So many fun activities at the hotel and that can be arranged through the hotel. very pleasant common areas!
The room, kitchen, pool are clean. it's near to the Pto. López malecon, we took a bus to move the hotel from the malecon in 15 min (aprox.) And we paid $0,75 per person.
large bedrooms and comfortable beds. nice balcony with hammock to read a book or chill. walking distance to salango and Puerto Lopez is easy accessible by taxi.
