Superb location in historic center! Great price, simple, clean with access to breakfast. You are greeted and assisted by the former owner who now manages the property. She is kind and solicitous of her guests’ needs and goes the extra mile to ensure their comfort. The walk up is a bit steep but we are 3 women in our 70s and managed.
There are two onsens for guests. The one for women is bright and cheerful.

Loved the peace and quiet after spending time in busy Tokyo. The morning markets and the Old Town were relaxing to stroll through and the locals were very helpful. We would definitely stay here again. Such a beautiful historical town.

Because i didn't know how good this Ryokan is i just planed the stay for one night. Probably it could be extended for at least one more night or two. Since we stayed there only one night we didn't plan to go much around.

It has been on my wish list, and we were there at the perfect time: Matsuri and cherry blossoms!!
I liked that it was not a big city. Hikes in the mountains/hills would have been nice, and the Hida Village was a special feature.

Takayama was my favourite destination in Japan - it is beautiful, a little calmer than some of the other tourist attraction cities and there was lots to see and do. I wish I had stayed longer. The espresso from the riverside market was the best coffee I had in Japan!

We highly recommend a visit.
We highly recommend a visit. The city is beautiful and provides a respite from the larger cities. The sound of the river seems to permeate the city. The flowering of cherry trees is magnificent during theSpring Festival. Some beautiful shrines and Edo period buildings, including a museum that provides an opportunity to walk through the living quarters and government administrative buildings and identifies the day to day functioning of a local government officials.
There is a wonderful, ‘tiny’ bar near the Retro Museum that is a place to hang out and meet other travelers and converse with the owner. His creative cocktails are really delicious. Loved the outside and upstairs seating as well.
This city knows how to welcome its guests with benches and a customer friendly attitude. Wonderful experience.

Takayama is a beautiful town.
Takayama is a beautiful town. It has a well preserved old district with historic buildings. We visited during spring and took a day trip to the ropeway. It would look amazing during winter. The people were super friendly & enjoyed tourists company.
As a first timer to experience Ryokan, we are spoiled with the modern facilities there (hot spring, breakfast and the amenities that been prepared, the staff is so helpful, one of them take their time to let us know how to use coin laundry. And the girl that we met on the check out day, she gave us a ride to Takayama station because I came back to return the adaptor that I lent during the stay. Even though the ryokan is traditional culture but Ichinomatsu can create a modern clean that make our stay feel more comfortable, easy and relaxing
My husband and I visited Japan for 20 days and this was one of our favorite places! It is an incredibly beautiful, well cared for traditional ryokan. The building is old, but that gives it so much character! The staff here were exceptional. They were incredibly kind and so friendly we felt very well taken care of during our stay. The onsens were beautiful as well! Also the futons they had were some of the most comfortable beds we slept in during our entire trip to Japan! I really can't recommend this ryokan enough!
quiet position, very near to the folk village. Great atmosphere. Host was super nice and helpful and spoke English (not a given thing in Japan). Room was BIG and in true Japanese style, even with a tokonoma. Lots of amenities provided (including Yumakata and jackets). dinner and sake (not included) were delicious. Private onsen was big and clean. Free bus for the station in the morning was very nice.
Felt like a VERY good deal for the price, compared to the other ryokans in Takayama.
The hotel feels ever so slightly on the older side, but in my opinion that works in its favour, as it adds to its charm. Everything was styled as a proper ryokan, the whole hotel has tatami floor. The top level open air Onsen is just fantastic, looking over the city (it was snowing very heavy while I was there, which made it even better). The breakfast buffet is also like a Japanese Kaiseki breakfast, amazing! Staff were also very friendly and polite like most places in Japan.
The ryokan is nice and authentic, with big enough and clean room. There is free onsen/bath. The host/landlady is really kind and prepared delicious traditional Japanese breakfast every morning. The position is excellent, 10 mins walk from the Takayama train station, 20 mins walk from town, 20 mins walk from Hida folk village. Smoking is allowed outside the ryokan, and the host provides tea, pajamas, towels, soap, and all you need.
Nicest home/hotel we stayed in our entire trip to Japan. The stay gave us the best combination of being in an old traditional home updated with modern appliances and conveniences. The check-in lounge is less than a five minute walk from the train station, and the home we stayed in was a five minute walk from there. Breakfast was traditional Japanese and fantastic. Host was wonderful. Will stay here next time I visit Takayama.
Combination of boutique hotel and ryokan, very comfortable stay in traditional Japanese room, lovely Onsen, delicious Japanese breakfast and wonderful staff. Great location near station, walk to old town and many restaurants, especially Sakurajaya ( 15 mins walk). Recommend booking for a wonderful meal that chef Hiroshi will create for you (see Lonely Planet review).
Super new and clean hotel!! The rooms are smaller but they are super modern, felt like no one stayed in our room before. They also provide DHC branded amenities even facial oil and toner on the first floor. Staff was kind and courteous. If Ryokans aren't your ideal place to stay, this is super comfortable!!! VERY CLEAN. Onsen on the first floor!
We enjoyed our experience at the Ryokan Tanabe very much. Our room felt spacious and we loved the Japanese-style dining area within our room.. Everywhere was spotlessly clean and the beds were surprisingly comfortable. We had our first use of an onsen which we found very relaxing.
The location of the ryokan is fantastic.
The service was outstanding, that staff were welcoming and went out of their way to make our stay pleasant. Dinner was very good, lots of gorgeous Hida beef, and a good introduction to a multicourse Japanese meal for our teenagers. The ryokan is well located for the morning markets and old town Takayama.
The hotel has everything you need for a confortable and ncie stay in Takayama. It is very close to the JR station (like 5min walk) and the city centre. The room was a bit bigger that the "japanease standard". The onsen was also really nice. The cost/quality ratio is very very high!
Amazing experience in a traditional Japanese house. we made a detour from our route and it was worth it. we stayed in a tatami bedroom with private onsen and we totally recommend the upgrade! we had time to relax and recover for our last days in this beautiful country.
A very authentic experience. You will find yourself in a traditional house with great shared spaces and most welcoming people. And for the price per night its deffinitely the best hotel we have stayed in Japan. (And we stayed also in some quite pricey Ryokans )
Staff were wonderful . Breakfasts were cooked individually for you . Room was huge - i mean HUGE !! Great shower . Hotel is very close to the Takayama station and to OLD TOWN . You can walk to all the local attractions from the hotel .
The hotel is beautiful, just in the historic district of Takayama.
The room was amazing really big with a natural decoration and super comfortable Japanese tatami beds.
The breakfast was amazing and the public onsen was beautiful.
A fantastic traditional Japanese hotel. Ryokan room was spacious and comfortable. Food was exceptional. The staff were very attentive and friendly. Facilities were great. A great option in this area.
Very unique ryokan style hotel set in a wonderful location. The staff was absolutely wonderful!! We enjoyed the one chance we had in Japan to book the private onsen on the top floor.
Return guest, this place is our favourite ryokan in the Hirayu-Takayama area with an onsen in the room. The place caters for the clients desires, and the service is exceptional.
The ryokan was beautiful, well equipped and comfortable.
The hotel has a wonderful onsen, a great traditional breakfast and lounge room.
Staff was amazing.
