In the heart of the historic market town of Barnard Castle, The Three Horseshoes Hotel is a 17th century building less than a mile from the River Tees.

The location was ideal as it was in the centre of the town, with all of the facilities nearby, including the castle, which was our reason for visiting Barnard Castle. The restaurant/breakfast room was very clean and the staff were friendly and efficient. We enjoyed the breakfast but the black pudding was rather dry and the poached eggs whites were not fully cooked. The cleanliness of the hotel, overall was excellent.
Located in the picturesque hamlet of Greta Bridge, this traditional and peaceful 4-star AA hotel is in a beautiful location close to the Tees Valley and Yorkshire Dales.

The place was beautiful, staff were so friendly We had food on the night time in The Smithy restaurant attached to the hotel. The food was tasty and well served. We opted for the traditional breakfast in the morning as part of our stay that was top quality

First I met lovely people at the Book Aid shop that drew me in on the way to the castle. A woman there informed of the existence of some little known or advertised places of historical interest. The well known points of interest, the castle, the Bowes Museum, and the Butter Market—wryly referred to by local people as “the round thingy” in the middle of the high street—lived up to expectations. The charity thrift shops and the Witham, a cultural center cum shop on the High Street offered wonderful shopping. People working at the castle, the Bowes museum, and the food co-op were wonderfully helpful, The food and service at Blagraves in a remarkable building, parts of which date from the 15th century, were excellent.
The town is easy to get around. Almost everything to be seen and done is on three contiguous streets, Galgate, the High Street, and the road leading from the Butter Market, about a five-minute walk, to the Bowes Museum (I didn’t get its name). There’s a sign for the castle ruins hidden and sloping downhill behind the Methodist church at the corner of Galgate and High Street.
I was only disappointed to not be able to see the prayer labyrinth in the floor of St.Mary’s Anglican Church at the corner of High Street and the road to the museum. It was covered with chairs occupied by worshippers for a special service with performance by a huge childrens’ choir at the moment I looked in on a Friday afternoon and the seating was being kept in place for several services over that weekend of the third Sunday of Advent. It was a consolation to see such signs of spiritual life in that church, and, God willing, I’ll get to see the labyrinth at a quieter time.

We would love to stay again
My wife and I very much enjoyed our three night stay at Newgate House, Barnard Castle. We both felt that the exceptional quality, homeliness feeling and lovely cooked breakfast certainly deserves the 10 out 10 score for the hard work and attention to detail given by our host Carole.
We very much look forward in returning again to this beautiful part of England
Thank you again, Bernhard & Marion
Really great place to stay, gorgeous local area. The room I had in the courtyard was exceptional, cosy but enough space. Decent comfy bed, powerful shower and so quiet you cannot hear any other guests. The breakfast was delicious and I also had an evening meal there too which was superb. There were a few of us staying with our dogs and they made us feel very welcome. Would definitely book again!
The Old Well Inn is very quaint and quirky and in a great location. Most of the staff were very friendly and welcoming. There is a cute little front bar with fireplace (although the fire was not lit on our visit). We ate dinner and breakfast at the Inn and both were delicious. The room we stayed in was on the top floor and was very comfortable and decorated to suit the age of the property.
Karen is a lovely host and a brilliant cook - her complimentary scones were delicious, and breakfast was fantastic! Cosy, traditional farmhouse with a very comfy bed and everything you could need for a great night's sleep. Very close to Barnard Castle with good local recommendations. We stayed over a rainy winter evening but can imagine how stunning it would be on a summer's day!
the location was excellent right in the centre of town amid all the shops and bars with easy access to the castle and river The property was well equipped clean and comfortable. The host communicated well and left some breakfast staples which were very welcome Very enjoyable stay.
Perfect location in the centre of Barnard Castle. All the equipment you could need for a self-catering getaway. Comfortable bed! Highly recommended. Plenty of nice places to eat within very easy walking distance, and close to the many attractions in the wider area.
Lovely apartment. Right in the center of Barnard castle. Very cozy. Lovely bathroom. Lovely touch from the proprietors on arrival. Milk bread biscuits and cereal. All your cleaning stuff if needed. Nothing wasn't thought off, we will definitely be back again
Lovely cottage with everything we needed for a week away from home. Sheila was very accommodating as the owner and gave us great recommendations for dinner!
Fab location and Barnard Castle is a lovely market town.
Stylish, clean, bright flat in a very good location for exploring Barnard Castle. Very easy to check in. Good choice of places to eat nearby and clear helpful information about how to find them.
Very quaint manor hotel in a really lovely location just outside of Barnard Castle. Even though we didnt have a dog with us it is a bonus. The decor, rooms and bar area were very nice.
Great location overlooking the park, a short walk to the main street where you can find all you need for enjoying Barnard Castle. Lovely property to stay in, warm and welcoming.
