Maitlandfield House Hotel, hotel in Gifford

Within walking distance of picturesque Haddington and just 16 mi from Edinburgh, Maitlandfield House features quality, efficiency, traditional charm and original elegance.

Room (I think it was 14?) was nice, although tv perhaps a bit small by modern standards. Good lighting for reading in bed - thankyou! Public rooms and front gardens very nice; the website showed more extensive grounds behind the hotel, but we had an evening commitment and a fairly early departure, so didn't get to look! Breakfast was fine and nicely served at table by friendly staff. Haddington is a nice small town with clearly a lot of history around the town and general region. I would like to come back to this area at some point, and this feels like a good base.

The Lodge at Craigielaw and Golf Courses, hotel in Gifford

Set in the heart of East Lothian's famous golf courses, Craigielaw offers rooms with views of the courtyard or the coastline with free parking on site.

Breakfast was awful. Everything was deep fried and disgusting. Small selection geared for playing golfers. Alternative vegetarian option but again all deep fried! Warning on menu too that no changes can be made. Weird! Restaurant manager was rude. Receptionist was fantastic. Room was good and spacious but a few broken items and curtains falling off.

Really comfortable bedroom, offering sea view and well located, about 15 mins walking distance from the city center and a short walk to the the sea. Really friendly staff, they're dog friendly indeed. They do care about your pet, constantly showing good care to all of us. It's definitely a city to return and a place to recommend (highly recommended). Absolutely great breakfast and quite a good beer selection for your after-hours.

A suitable location for exploring East Lothian, visiting Edinburgh and, to some extent, Berwickshire. Well suited as a base for cycling/walking or as a destination given there are decent food options e.g. cafe Lantern Rouge and the hotels. Yester castle ruins which has the "Goblins Hall" is a short walk from the town.

    A beautiful untouched Scottish village.

A beautiful untouched Scottish village. Surrounded by lovely woodland and rolling hills. Near historic Haddington. A few hundred feet from the hotel are the imposing and elegant gates to Yester House. There is a nice cafe round the corner and a village shop. The church has a 17th to 18th century interior. One of the ministers emigrated and became a signatory of the American Declaration of Independence. So free-thinking!

There were no downsides to Gifford in our opinion.

There were no downsides to Gifford in our opinion. A picturesque, historic village perfectly situated for country walks, access to plenty historic castles and stunning beaches (Dirleton, Gullane, North Berwick and more) whilst also offering easy access to Edinburgh city centre. We went there by car, but there are buses into Edinburgh and a short taxi drive away there is a train station. For those with a car and an interest in Scottish history the castles at Tantallon (sadly closed at the moment for safety reasons) where the medieval powerhouse of the Douglas family lived and Direlton and Fast are worth visits in addition to the more obvious Edinburgh castle. A quiet location but with lively bars in the evenings giving an opportunity to meet local people. I recommend the atmosphere, with log fires and comfy couches, and the food at the Goblin 'Ha hotel although we didn't go in the other bar/hotel so this is no reflection on its service.

Can't fault anything regarding my stay , apart from the shower was poor in power , but as the owners have only took it over april this year , really welcoming and down to earth , nothing was to much trouble, (asked for extra pillows and recieved without any hesitation)

Hotel accommodations not suitable for wheelchair users. Stay at Goblin Ha' Hotel was clean, safe and welcoming. Excellent dinner. Basic continental breakfast with no fruits or meats. Lovely picturesque village with a lot of greenery, playing field, park and off licence. It felt very safe and we’d happily return for another stay during the summer. Also the beds were comfortable and the bedding was hotel standard. My wife loved the sofa and the open plan living space is perfect for families.

I have stayed at the Tweedale 3 times and always enjoy the friendly welcome. The breakfast at rhe hotel is very good with a number of different choices from a full Scottish through to Haddock. The hotel also has a nice traditional country feel with comfortable beds. I will definitely back in the future..
