Surrounded by the countryside of Normandy, Caen is a proud city which pays poignant tribute to its past. It suffered greatly during World War II and although most of the structures have been carefully restored, one monument remaining partly in ruins is Saint-Étienne-le-Vieux church.
The church is across from a floral park overlooked by the stately 11th-century Abbaye aux Hommes, built by William the Conqueror, who is also buried there. His wife is buried in the equally grand Abbaye aux Dames by an even larger park to the east. Between the 2 lies another of William’s creations, the remarkably intact 11th-century Norman castle which now houses museums of Normandy history and fine art.
Another unmissable museum is the Memorial for Peace, a sensitive portrayal of the horrors of war, with particular emphasis on the D-Day landings on beaches north of the city. One road leading there passes Pegasus Bridge and the large Caen-Ouistreham passenger ferry port. The city is also served by Carpiquet Airport and a train station.
The surrounding streets are lined with shops and restaurants, and there are a few half-timbered buildings dotted around. The bars on Rue Ecuyére offer some of the best nightlife and are popular with the large student population.
Booking.com’s range of Caen accommodations includes luxury hotels, cheap B&Bs and apartments with parking.

The city is friendly and it is easy and cheap to get around using public transport. There are good restaurants, we can highly recommend Le Carlotta, great food, wine and a warm welcome.
Tips for visiting Normandy sites.
We used the 12 bus to visit Pegasus Bridge and Ranville Cemetery. Do not get on the 12 EX as this is the express bus and does not use the same route!
However, reaching the British Memorial at Ver-Sur-Mer from Caen in September proved impossible on public transport and a taxi was needed.

We mainly stayed in Caen for the Ferry crossing to the UK.
There are many places to visit and a short drive to
Ouistreham and the D Beaches, which we found very interesting to visit and a big part of history.
In Caen at the top to the right of the Chateau/castle there is a court place area of beautiful restaurants, a bit hidden away, worth finding.

It was an awesome place in the heart of the city with a lot of things to do and to explore around. We really enjoyed our stay. The apartment was perfectly sized for a short trip, it was clean and well organized. The host provided all required information proactive and responded quickly to any questions we had.

There is enough to see an do for at least a good three/four day stay. Lots of great museums and churches to visit. We ate in the old part of the city which was lovely and the food and atmosphere were great. There seems to be great public transport and a free tourist bus. We were also lucky enough to catch the large Sunday market.

Caen has got everything. A racetrack, a canal with boats.
Caen has got everything. A racetrack, a canal with boats. The resting places of both William the conqueror and Maltide his wife. A museum that details the bombardment in World war two in photographs and objects is housed in the Hotel de Ville. It is a modest collection, but all the better for that. Caen was bombed extensively in the war, entirely by allied bombing. There is a city bus line 6a and 6b that takes you all around the city, in a circular route, so you can get everywhere easily.

Would have loved to spend more time wandering the streets,...
Would have loved to spend more time wandering the streets, as we only really had one full day to explore.
Loved the Abbey des Hommes where tomb of William the Conquerer is, could have spent more time exploring this site.
Seemed to be lots of inviting restaurants, so again if we'd stayed longer could have tried out a lot more of what was on offer.
Staying in this hotel was like staying in a cruise ship cabin--the bathroom and microwave-fridge area looked like the kind of pre-molded units that you get when you set sail. The rest of the room was conventional, with modern furniture and comfortable beds (regular double bed and a double-sided sofa bed). It even had a proper dining table and sliding, hanging vinyl room dividers. Everything was clean, the window drapes fully blocked the light, and there were plenty of power outlets. On-site parking is free.
There is an underground car parking garage underneath the hotel which is most convenient for those who drive. An excellent choice of dishes is offered for breakfast. The staff were super helpful and amazingly understanding - most embarrasingly, our puppy lost control of her bladder in the foyer, but the receptionist was friendly and professional, and did her absolute best to assure me that it was no problem at all! We also requested a tax invoice many months after our stay, and received it within minutes.
We had a wonderful stay in Caen, and this location was excellent. William the Conqueror's tomb is just next door, and the bike path that takes you to the horse racing track is also ver close by. No-contact check-in instructions are easy to follow, and the room is very spacious! It even had milk, orange juice, and some jams/butter in case you bring home any bread. Also, there's plenty of coffee and tea, and the kitchenette is equipped with anything you'd need. This was a hidden gem!
Nice hotel in a rather quiet business area, plenty of parking space. Within a driving distance to Caen city center, excellent location for motorized travelers. Rooms are good and all the staff very helpful and professional. Swimming pool is slightly cold, but good for swimming, which is a really nice after a long day of walking/exploring. We also enjoyed their restaurant, which serves very good food. Book a table for dinner in the morning to get a seat.
I have stayed in numerous hotels for 1 night stopovers to and from the ferry to caen and this hotel is bar far the best we've stayed in! It's spotless, airy, the bed is extremely comfortable, the staff are friendly and courteous and breakfast was excellent! Where else in France are you offered scrambled eggs, bacon and beans as part of your breakfast! Liked it so much we have booked for our return stopover before catching the ferry.
friendly staff and clean
very small hotel with small bedroom
A bit cramped at breakfast as it was also the reception room
No public parking available nearby in this very busy part of town so eventually found parking and had to walk with the bags for 15 minutes back to the hotel
public parking free between 1800 and 9am but really expensive during the day
nice part of old Caen but Don’t take your car
The staff was very helpful. The room was clean. Although the room lacked air condition (it was okay, because I knew it in advance) and the weather was hot, the climate in Caen helped and the room cooled down during night, so I felt comfortable. There was enough space. The hotel is in the center of the city. I used public transport for transfers, and the bus and tram stops were nearby.
The hotel is a little far out from places it’s in the middle of a being built new area, the area itself doesn’t have much to do bar going shopping at a supermarket. But I’m sure once they build it up more there will be more to do? It was two bus rides from the ferry port to get to, but a comfortable walking distance to Caen owning that Sunday buses are every three hours!
This small hotel is in an ideal location for a quick overnight. It is very close to the train station and the car rental offices. The room is small but comfortable and had everything we needed. It was very clean. The nice man who checked us in let us go to a room a little early since a room was available. Lots of shops and places to eat nearby.
We were traveling to Caen as a stop-over via car. We wrongly believed that the hotel had a carpark. However, they were able to accommodate us in their private yard so that my family (including a toddler) could easily transport our luggage back and forth. The staff were extremely helpful in accommodating this.
The staff and hotel were fine. The location is directly across the street from , train &, bus station and the car rental office is on the same street. The hotel is clean and the staff are very helpful. It is a perfect place for 1 night.
This is a lovely place to stay , our room was a perfect size . Great views over the roof tops. Staff were some of the best I’ve ever come across during a lot of hotel stays . I cannot fault this place the proprietor thought of everything
The hotel is a basic one and it is good for a short stay in Caen. The rooms are clean, housekeeping everyday, and it's located in the city centre close to major bus stops, restaurants, and it's only a 10 mins to the main station.
We came to visit the Memorial museum so for that it delivered. From the hotel is just best to rent a car because it's complicated to go around in the city without. The hotel was easy to find and is located in a nice place.
Impeccable nicely decorated hôtel, in excellent location.
Paid underground parking on the same square.
Small but well equipped room, functional bathroom.
Good breakfast, efficient staff.
Able to check in early.
The hotel is very well located, right by Caen's city centre and commercial streets. While the room for three people was small and basic, it was pragmatic enough for a short stay
I stayed one night on my way to Port En Bessin. The hotel did not do food that night but it was a short walk to a great steak house. It was a short walk to the Caen WW2 Museum.
Nice location, very nice owner. Towels are home washed, so they smell good. Coffee was available until 22:00, in other hotels only available during breakfast.
