At the meeting point of Switzerland, Germany and France, Basel is an eclectic mix of historic and modern, tranquil and vibrant, with Swiss cleanliness and efficiency thrown in for good measure.
Augusta Raurica, on the outskirts, has a well-preserved Roman theater, while the Old Town is a museum of medieval buildings. The Renaissance Town Hall looks down on Marktplatz’s daily market, while the red sandstone and colorful tiles of the Münster were reconstructed in the 19th century. Bringing it right up to date are the modern creations of city residents Herzog & De Meuron, designers of London’s Tate Modern.
When you’ve finished exploring this architectural heritage, there are still plenty of things to do in Basel. The city’s fine art museum is the world’s oldest art collection, and the zoo is the oldest and largest in Switzerland. Remember to bring plenty of Swiss francs for the shopping mile along Clarastrasse and Freiestrasse.
The Basel accommodations on Booking.com range from hotels in Grossbasel to B&Bs in Kleinbasel, home to the nightlife. If you’re flying into Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg Airport in February or March, you might just catch Fasnacht, Switzerland’s biggest carnival. You’ll have to get up early to catch the 4 am start, though!

Basel was much nicer than I had anticipated!
Basel was much nicer than I had anticipated! I usually go to Luzern and Zurich while traveling by train; making them brief stops of two or three days. This time I stopped in Basel and I was delighted with this wonderful city! I can’t wait to return and plan on staying a few more days to take it all in! Wonderful for shopping and dining and easy to get to on the train. Also convenient for visiting surrounding areas, making an ideal home base for longer visits in Switzerland.

We absolutely loved the zoo!
We absolutely loved the zoo! Quite small but the layout was deceptive so that it seemed much larger. The animals appeared well cared for and the enclosures were spacious with attention to enriching the environment for them, while at the same time allowing the visitors to get very close to them. In a very expensive country the entrance fee was very reasonable and half price with the Basel card.
The university botanical garden was also a little gem with a collection of unusual plants beautifully displayed and free to visit.
Basel itself an attractive city with a good feel about it. Don’t miss the quirky fountains near the theatre in the centre of town. Everything is very expensive for a British visitor which applies to Switzerland in general.

Perfect for a city break and good connection even to travel to other cities nationally and internationally as Basel is sandwhiched between France and Germany so, up to you where your heart will lead you for a day trip towards those countries.
Peaceful and efficient. Trasport good, people chilled.
Be ready to bring some money if you need to stay longer.

Basel is magical, I really enjoyed visiting it.
Basel is magical, I really enjoyed visiting it. The old town is so so nice. It's also very well connected to other places like Reigoldswil for the waterfall or to Augusta Raurica which I recommend.

Lovely city, but very expensive!
Lovely city, but very expensive! Mind you that most kitchens close at 21h and don't accept customers well in advance, as well as lots of places are closed on Sundays and Mondays. Go for all the beauty of the city, but bring the big wallet and plan to eat out early if you don't rent a place with a kichen and cook yourself. Don't bother to stay on a Monday, and consider to leave early on a Sunday, those two days are very, very quiet in Basel!
the breakfast wasn't included since this is an apartment and not a hotel, but the location was near the coop and other areas, even the indian restuaurants like bay leaf was just few steps away, the public park was near by, i went there for a walk for 2 hours during my stay. I intend to book my stay again at this place when i plan to visit switzerland again,
the host was very helpful, he provided me with tools that i needed, he provided me with two fans because there was no AC, i faced no issues at all,
The hotel location is excellent. We took bus #50 from the airport to the train station. The hotel is a short walk from the bus stop. It was a leisure walk to the old town. There were a lot of places to get food in the train station or the Markthalle nearby.
The breakfast was very good. A good selection of food and freshly made coffee. The hotel staff was helpful and friendly.
the location of the hotel is very accessible to bus, tram and walking distance to the old town. the room is very spacious and fresh. every corner is clean and immaculate. the bed is so comfy you would not want to get up. breakfast is also good. the staff are all friendly and helpful. i would be staying here again the next time I visit Basel.
First time in Basel with Sorell. Nice place and location. Warm and professional team crew. I have been at Sorell in other places and I can confirm they are super in Switzerland.
The hotel is in old town, you can drop the car in their private parking and visit the city by walk or with public transport. E-scooter is also an interesting option.
The staff was super helpful and friendly. The hotel is conveniently located near the bus and tram stops. I love the music in the air, being right next to the Basel music academy. The breakfast had delicious and fresh options. The bar at the hotel has excellent service and desserts. Free bike rental and Basel card are great bonuses.
The staff was nice and helpful. The lobby area was a lovely place to sit and relax while having a drink from the bar and listening to piano music. The room was nice and comfortable. The trams stopped right in front of the hotel, which made it convenient to get to the Market and Old Town, which we really enjoyed.
fantastic hotel, very luxurious and comfortable. location is perfect and the staff are lovely. Check in was simple and Hugo was very friendly and helpful. the rooms were fantastic and comfortable. We really enjoyed our stay here and was the best hotel we stayed in whilst in Switzerland.
Check out possible till 12:00 (or later as a member).
Beds at IBIS hotels are really excellent and the rooms have black out curtains and air conditioning.
Free ticket to use the public transportation which also gives discounts on city museums and the hotel is served by 2 tram lines.
Quiet small hotel, located in walking distance from both Messeplatz and old city centre. Pleasant, helpful staff. When you come in after 10.00 pm you need to call (if you forgot to bring the access number), and they took the call immediately. Good value for money, clean place.
A very nice hotel, well located, close to the city centre. The staff was very helpful and always keen to help. The room was comfortable, a tad small but just what you need for a long weekend. Very easy to reach by tram, bus, or foot. Breakfast was very good as well.
This hotel really has its act together - super efficient and well organised. Arrived to find even a little street map of the city in the room and a kettle for tea (unusual in Switzerland). Perfect place to break while travelling by rail.
Breakfast was good but very expensive as is Switzerland
Hotel staff exceptional - giving me a kettle when I asked for boiling water and a glass when I bought some wine from their chiller
Was even able to get BBC 1&2 on room TV
The electric fireplace is really nice in the hall. The receptionist was kind. The hotel is located close to the city centre, yet in a quiet area. Free tea and coffee on the ground floor.
Idéal location in the city centre, a short distance from the railway station and on the edge of the old town. Comfortable rooms, good breakfast, good value for money for Switzerland.
The location was perfect for my need. The room was very clean. Complimentary coffee and water were very appreciated. The free hotel car park is a rarity in the Basel area
The location. We were travelling from frankfurt to Switzerland, so we had a stopover there. The parking facility was nice.
The price for double room was also good.
New, stylish, spacious facilities.
Clean, quiet, with great beds.
Excellent location.
Fantastic value for the money for Basel and /Switzerland overall.
